FlightSense Pilot Monitoring System
Example Defense Monitoring System
One example of P-CARDIO technology applied in defense environments is the FlightSense physiological monitoring system for fighter pilots.
FlightSense enables continuous physiological monitoring during flight operations, allowing analysis of pilot workload and physiological responses during demanding flight conditions.
The project was developed in collaboration with:
- Dutch Ministry of Defence
- TNO
- Elitac Wearables
- 2M Engineering
Within the project, 2M Engineering developed and certified the complete data acquisition system, including the recorder hardware, docking station and the software platform used to store and analyse the data.

System Architecture
The FlightSense monitoring system consists of three main building blocks.
1. Physiological Sensor Belt
The system uses a lightweight wearable belt developed by Elitac Wearables, integrating dry electrodes for physiological sensing.
Measured parameters include:
- ECG (single lead cardiac monitoring)
- respiration via bio-impedance
- body motion via integrated IMU sensors
The belt is worn around the chest and connected to the FlightSense recorder.
2. Multi-Sensor Recorder
The FlightSense recorder, developed and certified by 2M Engineering, captures and stores physiological data throughout the flight.
The recorder collects data from multiple sensors including:
- ECG
- BioZ respiration
- IMU motion sensing
Additional physiological signals can be integrated depending on the research configuration.
The recorder is designed for reliable operation in demanding operational environments, ensuring data collection throughout the entire mission.
3. Docking Station & Data Management System
After the flight, the recorder is placed in a docking station (“Flight Case”), which supports:
- device charging
- automated data download
- recording management for multiple recorders
A single docking case can manage up to 12 recorders simultaneously.
All recorded physiological data is:
- encrypted
- stored locally in a secure database
- accessible for authorised medical personnel
The software platform developed by 2M Engineering allows flight doctors and researchers to access and review physiological data offline for further analysis.
